Gotham Knights allows players to step into the boots of four iconic heroes—Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin—to protect the streets of Gotham City. While you can experience the entire campaign with a single hero, switching between characters offers fresh combat dynamics and unique narrative interactions. Understanding how and when you can swap heroes is essential for optimizing your gameplay strategy and getting the most out of every patrol.
Unlocking Character Switching and Reaching the Hub
Before you can change your active hero, you must first complete the opening tutorial section of the game. Once you finish the initial night patrol and unlock access to the Belfry, the character switching feature becomes fully available. Returning to this central HQ serves as the primary way to manage your roster throughout your campaign.
Inside the Belfry, locate the four suit display racks positioned to the left of the Batcomputer. Interacting with any hero's showcase allows you to view their current stats and confirm your character swap. You can switch heroes freely as long as you are safe inside the headquarters.
Shared Progression and Individual Gear Mechanics
One major advantage in Gotham Knights is that experience points and character levels are shared across the entire team. When your primary hero levels up, every other hero reaches that same level automatically. This ensures that switching to a new character never leaves you underpowered against tough enemies.
However, equipment and individual abilities do not transfer directly between heroes. You will need to allocate earned skill points and craft weapon upgrades for each hero separately. Spending time customizing each character's loadout is key to maintaining high combat readiness.
Patrol Constraints and Tactical Selection
It is important to keep in mind that you cannot swap characters while actively exploring Gotham City or in the middle of a mission. Returning to the Belfry during a patrol will officially end the current night cycle and advance the daily timeline. Planning your hero selection before stepping out on patrol prevents unwanted interruptions to your progress.
Choosing the right knight depends heavily on your preferred playstyle for specific encounters. For instance, Robin excels at stealth-heavy infiltration missions, whereas Red Hood offers heavy ranged damage for massive fights. Swapping heroes regularly keeps combat fresh and allows you to experience every character's distinct Knighthood abilities.
